Because of its unique place in modern history, its daily impact on the world through science and technology and its excellence in academics  athletics, administration and commerce, Salute America has selected Oak Ridge as the "first city" in the nation - "The Model City" - to be honored by the Salute America Campaign. Through this Salute America Oak Ridge “Tennessee Pride” event we hope to help in some small way to create a year round sense of meaning, a sense of importance, a sense of opportunity, a sense of pride and a sense of destiny in Oak Ridge, East Tennessee, and across the State.

This is a time to recognize and remember. This is a time of vision and hope. This is a time to take action and to achieve. We Tennesseans have a lot to be proud of. We are the Volunteer State, the 16th State in the Union, the home of great educational institutions, and a  national state, and local sports tradition among the top in the nation. We are Tennessee Volunteers. We are Titans and we are Wildcats. Oak Ridge, Tennessee and America, we Salute you. There's a winner in you. Take your place that's what winner do.

We are at a crossroads of history in Oak Ridge, the State of Tennessee and the nation  with tremendous opportunity that requires action to fulfill a destiny we must only summon to achieve. Confidence and ambition with a common purpose for the common good is the fuel of the future and if ideas are the currency of the 21st Century, then this city, this state and this nation have money in the bank. Unity in pride with a sense of purpose are necessary to rally the destiny that lies before us and inspired action places no bounds upon which we can achieve. We urge all to become crusaders for achievement.

Our past is a harbinger for future success in meeting the challenges of the future and to overcome obstacles we now face and have met in the past with the heart of gladiators.

We urge all to participate is the December 13, 2003 celebration of Oak Ridge and Tennessee Pride and that others across East Tennessee and the State celebrate their "Tennessee Pride." We hope the Oak Ridge community and other communities across the State of Tennessee will take action to recognize their history, academics and athletics throughout 2004.

Rebuilding Iraq - An American Mayor on a Mission
__

Pride is something deep in our heart that does not leave us no matter where we go. Pride creates a sense of duty and a commitment to what what we believe in. Pride causes us to take a stand, to fight, to defend, and to relish in that we are proud of. We Tennesseans and maybe, especially us Oak Ridgers, believe we have more to be proud of than most. We are not just Americans, we are Tennesseans and believe we are set apart from the pact because we are Oak Ridgers. We are from a City dripping with history that impacts the world more than any small city in America, if not the world.

A touching example of pride in Oak Ridge and the call of an American to duty comes from an man that has been and is an important part of the tradition and history of Oak Ridge. Former Oak Ridge Mayor JerryKuhaida who is now in Iraq helping America to rebuild Iraq carries the banner of Oak Ridge pride to that distant dangerous land..

Mr.Kuhaida resigned as the Mayor of Oak Ridge to go to Iraq to help rebuild the country. He is an Oak Ridger and proud of it. He reaches out to this "Oak Ridge 'Tennessee Pride' Day" in his special salute to Oak Ridge. Below is an email sent by Jerry Kuhaida on December 7, 2003 in Support of "Oak Ridge Pride."

Greetings from Al Hilla, Iraq by .
Jerry Kuhaida

My name is Jerry Kuhaida and arrived in Oak Ridge in 1952 at the age of 10. Having moved from a dirty, polluted steel mill city on the Ohio River, I recognized the uniqueness of Oak Ridge. Clear air, clear water and houses with yards and woods to play in were etched in my memory at that young age. For some reason, at the age of 18 as I was embarking on my life’s journey beyond Oak Ridge, I decided that when I had children, I wanted to raise them in Oak Ridge.

My ventures took me Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute on Cape Cod, to East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, back to Woods Hole and an “Around the World Cruise” in 320 days in 1965, and marriage and teaching in Pulaski and Wytheville, VA. In 1972, with a 6 weeks old son, my wife and I headed west to the University of Denver, a brief respite in Oak Ridge from 1976-78, then back to DU where I to received my PhD in 1980. Oh yes, and we were surprised with a daughter born in Denver in October 1979.

With two children, I remembered my goal to raise my children in Oak Ridge. We left Denver and headed home to Oak Ridge in my 1966 Ford Pickup pulling a U-haul trailer. I had a job in West Knoxville but bought a home in the 1950, high class neighborhood of Woodland. When I wanted to move up the housing ladder, my family balked because of the convenience, Woodland School and Jefferson Jr. High. Outnumbered 4 to 1, my home is still there today.

In 1987, I was faced with another decision; move with Bechtel or seek employment in Oak Ridge. As a personal commitment, on a clear, crisp, fall day while waiting for an auto parts store to open, I committed to become involved with the city government. With my children as my priority and my goal to raise them in Oak Ridge, I took a job with Martin Marietta. By 1988, I was chair of the Environmental Quality Advisory Board, elected to City Council in 1991, un-elected in1995, elected again in 1997, served as Mayor from June 1999 to June 2001 and resigned August 30, 2003 to come to Iraq.

It should be obvious that Oak Ridge has been a very special place for me for over 50 tears. However, I didn’t realize why until thinking time in Iraq. I was reminded of Oak Ridge’s place in history, its contribution to the country during the Cold War and the many technical developments that have benefited all citizens of the United States. The pride and competition that results in the best for the City and its citizens.

My personal pride in having worked with so many outstanding citizens for the benefit of the City. My pride in the opportunities Oak Ridge has afforded my three children: Captain Steven Kuhaida, US Army, Baghdad, Iraq, Oak Ridge Firefighter Carrie Kuhaida and Mr. Kevin Kuhaida. My pride in the City of Oak Ridge staff for doing the impossible: teaching ( or training) me in their many areas of expertise so I could be an informed and knowledgeable elected official. I am honored that I can offer that to the citizens of Iraq.

Lastly, all of the above results in the drive for Oak Ridge to be the best in all endeavors. This is something that I have been continually reminded of when I say I’m from Oak Ridge. Here in Iraq, I have recently realized that is what has made me what I am. I take great pride in being an Oak Ridger.

From Al Hilla Iraq
