Los Angeles

Los Angeles is certainly the dream maker providing a beacon of hope to its citizenry and to the world.  It is a melting pot of cultural diversity rich with history, creative talent and unlimited potential.  It is strong and optimistic with ever-greater dreams for achievement. Los Angeles is the home of unfettered entrepreneurship, cutting edge technology, and imagination. The city hosts a diverse array of creative industries, including music, television, film, dance, entertainment, publishing, art, fashion, theatrical and many others. When originally conceived Los Angeles was envisioned as an art and cultural center for the world.  Now, over 200 years later the dream continues.  Los Angeles has become the "Creative Capital of the World" with an ever-greater destiny still unfolding in the 21st Century.

The 15th
Annual
SALUTE TO LOS ANGELES
Celebrating “The Creative Capital of the World”
___

"Los Angeles is strong, optimistic and full of the kind of challenges that create opportunity.  Indeed, Los Angeles is undisputedly the creative capital of the world, home to the world's most cutting-edge companies, people, and trends."
-- L.A. Mayor James Hahn 2002 - Speech to Rotarians
___

This proposal advocates a festival that will provide a rallying call for the City of Los Angeles. It will draw citywide, if not nationwide, attention to those involved.

1.         OVERVIEW

Overview. On July 4th 2006, the Fort Moore Memorial Committee[1] will lead a coalition of organizations in a salute to the City of Los Angeles as the Creative Capital of the World.  This festival will pay tribute to the City of Los Angeles, its history, its culture and its people with a multicultural intergenerational celebration which includes a parade, historical reenactments, awards, vendors, booths, and much more.  This multicultural event provides an entertaining day of learning and excitement for the whole family.

The July 4th 2006, festival will unite the communities, industries, media, government, arts, and others of Los Angeles to celebrate L.A.’s 1st Independence Day of July 4th 1847, its history and its people and recognize that Los Angeles is the "Creative Capital of the World."

This 15th annual 4th of July event[2] pays tribute to the history of Los Angeles, its pioneers, the first Los Angeles Independence Day of July 4th 1847, at the historical Fort Moore Pioneer Monument.[3]  The annual parade of reenactors, bands, and dignitaries will follow an historic path through downtown L.A.  This event is a fun learning experience for the entire family.  It includes authentic 1847-period costumes, cannon and musket fire, historical reenactments, tributes to Los Angeles and to veterans, children’s activities, family history search on computers, pie-eating contest, entertainment, and much more.  It is a true 4th of July event celebrating Los Angeles pride and unity.

July 4th, 2006, will be the biggest event in downtown Los Angeles. You can be a part of the “echoes” of history and pay tribute to over 159 years of tradition by sponsoring or participating in the festival.

A First. This tribute to Los Angeles as the Creative Capital of the World will be a first.  The time to pay tribute to the City of Los Angeles and its people for their unique place as a leader in the world of creativity is long overdue.

The salute will involve a series of events in Los Angeles that will include an official proclamation that Los Angeles is “The Creative Capital of the World,” presentation to the city of a permanent memorial, and numerous awards to members of the creative community of Los Angeles for their contributions to the art, culture and humanities.  This celebration of Los Angeles will build a coalition for greater civic pride. The event will encourage members of the Los Angeles community to become ‘Ambassadors’ for their city. It will provide a cause upon which the city can rally.

Involving the greater Los Angeles area. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will be urged to declare July 4th as “Salute Los Angeles Day.”

Permanent Memorial. A permanent emblem[4], plaque, sculpture, or item embedded in the sidewalk (in front of City Hall or elsewhere) stating "The Creative Capitol of the World" will be presented.

2.         PUBLIC RELATIONS OPPORTUNITY

Unique Nature of the Cause.  The festival will provide a tremendous public relations opportunity because of the unique combination of events, the date and the place.  In addition to providing a historic multicultural festival and proclamation that Los Angeles is the Creative Capital of the World, the parade, Salute America Awards, CAN DO Kids show and events, education booths for homeland security, emergency preparedness and relief, anti drug and alcohol information, and other subjects of interest to the public which contribute to making a better world; have great public relations and photo opportunity potential.

There are no limits to the enthusiasm that may be drawn from this project.  It is expected that many will desire to be a part of this historic event.  An effective public relations effort will draw a great deal of media and community attention.

Lasting Impact. Sponsoring events have lasting public relations impact because the sponsor name is always associated with the festival.  All promotional material, letters, and press releases will state,

A Special Tribute to Los Angeles - Celebrating the Creative Capital of the World
Presented by MAIN SPONSOR NAME or NAMES

The festival is promoted as an “Annual” event and will set the stage for years of involvement by major sponsors. This year’s sponsors will have the option for annual sponsorship and would always be a permanent part of the history of the event.  Initial sponsorship would provide years of public relations opportunity.

3.         MAXIMIZING THE POTENTIAL

Coalition of Events. By coordination of the public relations efforts of several events that have similar purposes or can tie into a consistent theme there can be a synergy that enhances the public relations opportunity and which still maintains the individual integrity of each event. Attention may be drawn to all events involved by a joint press event and coordinated press releases.

Broad Based Planning Committee. By establishing a planning committee which involves many members of the creative and cultural community, from, among others, the historic, film, recording, arts, media and others, there is project outreach.

The Build-up. There will be numerous small events, mixers, meet-and-greets, support meetings, ceremonies, announcements and press related activities that build up to the day that Los Angeles is officially declared "The Creative Capital of the World."

Special Events. A series of events will honor the arts, culture, history, and people of Los Angeles. An awards event saluting Los Angeles will occur on July 4th 2006, that will include awards presentation, celebrity guests, community leaders, and speakers. A book will be produced, entitled "A Tribute to Los Angeles," about the award recipients and Los Angeles as the Creative Capital of the World.  This book will be placed in over 160 branch libraries in Los Angeles as an historic memorial.

Tying Events Together. In order to maximize the build up for the July 4th festival we will tie in with other events such as the Children’s Mural in Hollywood, LA’s 225th Birthday, the Sister Cities Program, and other.

Documentary Film or Special. Because of the date, purpose, cultural diversity, intergeneration component of the festival the potential for a film special or documentary exists.

Music Album. The potential exists for a music album call Salute America which would contain positive uplifting songs about America and its people. Titles like “There’s a Winner in You,” “Onward America,” “The Spirit of America,” and others have already been written.

Program with Historical Information about L.A. A souvenir book with the history of Los Angeles and sponsored tributes is planned. The book would be entitled a “Tribute to Los Angeles.”

4.         AWARDS
Awards:  Awards will be given to individuals, organizations, businesses, communities and others involved in the preservation of history, the arts, culture, technology, science and the communications media.  Recipients will be selected from across the greater Los Angeles area in an attempt to rally broad support for this celebration.  We will bring together people of diverse cultures from throughout the Los Angeles area and its vast creative community for a unique tribute.

Honoring the Achievers Amongst Us. Categories that should be considered for special focus are:

·         Seniors
·         Children
·         Firemen
·         Policemen
·         Military
·         Government employees
·         News and Media
·          Historians
·          Film Industry
·          Music Industry
·          Technology/Science
·           And others

Tributes Inspire Achievement. Tributes inspire achievement and provide recognition for those that deserve it.  This special tribute to Los Angeles will provide a vehicle for many organizations to recognize outstanding achievers and those that may otherwise go unrecognized.

5.         ESTABLISHING PLANNING/AWARDS COMMITTEE

Planning Committee - Getting Everyone Involved.  This event is a project for everyone who is proud of Los Angeles.  A selection committee which draws from virtually every creative and cultural corner of Los Angeles will be established in order to gain wide support for the cause. Members of the selection committee will be picked by the core organizers and should pool from prestigious organizations with substantial membership or community involvement. Twenty (20) organizations would help to maximize the public relations potential.  Every organization on the committee would determine award recipients.

Purpose of Committee - "Coalition for Los Angeles."  The "Coalition for Los Angeles" organizing committee will select recipients and otherwise garner support for the event. 10 organizations shall select or nominate 10 recipients (or 20 organizations can select 5 recipients.)  There will be awards for the top 10 organizations and top 10 individuals.

6.         TYING IN TO EXISTING EVENTS

An Event Bonus.  Awards may be provided at existing events in a manner that compliments the event and provides an event bonus. Depending upon the number of awards given, a booth, table or other appropriate setting for the awards can be established where the recipient receives the award and has a picture taken with a community, event, or organization leader.  There may be a place in the event where it is appropriate to introduce or announce certain special recipients.
Involving Many Organizations.  Providing a vehicle for many organizations to present awards at a unique or special event creates greater community involvement and awareness of the event.  Organizations tend to support awards to members of the organization or people they nominate.

SUMMARY

On July 4th 2006, Salute America and the Fort Moore Memorial Committee will produce a festival that will Salute Los Angeles, its history, its diverse cultures and its people.  Los Angeles will be celebrated as the Creative Capital of the World because it hosts a diverse array of creative industries, diverse cultures, unfettered entrepreneurship, cutting edge technology, and is a birthplace for imagination. Major industries in Los Angeles are expected to participate.

This 15th annual multicultural festival provides an entertaining day of learning and excitement for the whole family.  It will celebrate L.A.’s first Independence Day of July 4th 1847, and will include a parade with marching bands and dignitaries, historical reenactments, awards presentations, food vendors, display booths, live entertainment and much more.  Set in historic downtown Los Angeles the festival will have a multicultural flavor with representation from virtually all cultures which make up Los Angeles.  There will be Chinese line dancers, full dress Aztec Indians, El Pueblo entertainers, Buffalo soldiers, Gospel choirs, Korean groups, Russian artists and many others. This historic early Californio experience will be accented with early Californios bands, period costumes, cannon and musket fire, blacksmiths, pottery making, gold panning, music, food and dance, as well as a fireworks show and much more.

There will be 100 food booths for vendors to provide a taste of L.A. featuring food from the various cultures.  There will be 100 display booths for the arts, crafts, and foreign embassies of L.A. as well as public service booths on homeland security, disaster preparedness, anti drug and alcohol information and a special CAN DO Kids room. Salute America “There’s a Winner in You” Extra Effort Awards will be given to CAN DO Kids, veterans, and many others that make a better Los Angeles.

The event will be widely publicized on radio, television and in the print media. There will be thousands of flyers and posters distributed.  There will be hundreds of street banners to promote the event.  Many organizations will participate in grassroots promotion to make purposeful as well as entertaining.

The event already draws substantial media attention because of July 4th, it is the only event I downtown Los Angeles on that date, and because of the photo opportunities created by the cannon and musket fire, period costumes and dignitaries that attend.  Sponsorship is needed to make this the biggest event in Los Angeles on July 4th.

When originally conceived Los Angeles was envisioned as an art and cultural center for the world. Now, over 200 years later the dream continues.  Los Angeles has become the "Creative Capital of the World" with an ever-greater destiny still unfolding in the 21st Century. Join us in a celebration of Los Angeles pride and cultural diversity.

In his Inaugural Address on July 1, 2005
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said:
"Dream with Me."

[2] L.A.’s First Independence Day commemoration began in 1991, some years with just a small group of people and Boy Scout Troop #560.  In 1997, at the 150-year anniversary of this event, it expanded with a parade, cannon and musket fire, and volunteers from Fort Tejon State Historic Park dressed as United States Dragoons, and volunteers dressed as 1st Iowa Volunteers (aka Mormon Battalion) who together re-enacted L.A.’s First Independence Day, some on horseback, and others providing the cannon fire and color guard.  The event has grown in interest, and over the years has become an annual tribute to Los Angeles and its history.

[3] On the 4th of July, 1847, in a ceremony involving 700 parading troops, the New York Volunteers Brass Band, and on-looking local townspeople and Indians, the 28-star U.S. flag was raised to a 13-musket salute by the 1st United States Dragoons.  The Fort was christened Fort Moore by Colonel Jonathan Stevenson, being named after Captain Benjamin Davies Moore, an officer of the First Dragoons gave his life at the Battle of San Pasqual.
