IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OAK RIDGE TEACHER AND STUDENT COUNCIL TO BE HONORED
FOR 911 MEMORIAL PROJECT AT AMERICAN MUSEUM OF
SCIENCE AND ENERGY
OAK RIDGE – On
February 27, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. the American Museum of Science and
Energy (AMSE) and Salute America will honor Oak Ridge High School (ORHS)
teacher Ken Senter and the Oak Ridge High School Student Council for
their vision, extra effort and persistence in implementing the only
911 project of its nature in the United States. The project plans to
place a 911 memorial in the capital of every state in the United
States. Mr. Senter and members of the ORHS Student Council including
its President, Amy Taras, Vice President, Anna Handley, Secretary,
Kelley Dziedzic and Treasurer Stefanie Hall will receive a Salute
America “There’s a Winner in You” AMSE Extra Effort Award at the AMSE
event.
Since September 17, 2001 Mr. Senter and the
ORHS Student Council have worked in cooperation with the US Army Corps
of Engineers and the offices of Michael Bloomberg of New York City on
the project. ORHS was able to obtain three steel beams from the World
Trade Center as well as granite for the memorial.
In July of 2002 a permanent 911 memorial
was constructed on the campus of ORHS by O’Quinn Enterprises. On
July 8, 2002 Oak Ridge Firefighters and Police Officers joined with
community leaders and Oak Ridge residents in receiving the WTC Steel
at a dedication ceremony to those who lost their lives on 911. This
permanent memorial consists of a 13 foot beam from the 100th
floor of the WTC, a smaller portion of steel, granite from the WTC and
a dedication plaque.
For
the national component of the project, one steel beam from the 65th
floor of the WTC has been divided into 50 pieces to be donated to
each of the 50 states. ORHS students have welded 50 pieces of the
cross section of the beam to a steel backing to be included in the
memorial for each state. The segments of the beam will be incorporated
into a plaque to be placed in or at the capital building in each state
or in a school in each capital city.
According to Mr. Senter, “Local, state, and national legislatures have
supported the plan through resolutions and direct cooperation. We are
looking for legislation from each state to receive these plaques and
to coordinate a simultaneous unveiling on a future September 11th
anniversary of the terrorist attacks.” Mr. Senter added, “We want to
memorialize the victims of terrorism from New York, Washington, D.C.,
and Pennsylvania with this nationwide project. We want to symbolize
the resolve and unity of our nation in the aftermath of the attacks.
We want to help inspire citizens of every state to
stand up to this world-wide plague of
brutality.”
The ORHS Student Council, with the approval
of the School Board, has established a Fund to finance the project.
Each memorial will cost approximately $4,000 to build and distribute,
unless free delivery arrangement with a major shipping firm. 100% of
donations will go to construction and distribution of the plaques,
promoting the idea in the media and with legislatures, and
coordination of the simultaneous national unveiling. This complete
dedication of funds to the actual work is possible because the work of
the Foundation will be carried out by its officers, board members, and
students and staff of Oak Ridge Schools, all on a volunteer basis.
To contribute or get more information about
the project see
www.wtcsteel.org or call Ken Senter at 865.425.9601.
