Overview
On July 4th 2006
the Fort Moore Memorial
Committee will lead
a coalition of
organizations in a Salute to the City of Los Angeles
as the Creative Capital of the World ©.
This event will pay tribute to the City of Los
Angeles, its history, its culture and its people with
a multicultural intergenerational celebration which
includes a parade, historical reenactments, awards,
vendors, booths, and much more.
This tribute to Los Angeles, its history and its people,
seeks to draw from the many and diverse cultures that live in Los Angeles
to provide an entertaining day of learning and excitement for the whole
family.
The July 4th 2006 event
will unite the communities, industries, media, government, arts, and
others of Los Angeles to celebrate Los Angeles Independence Day, its
history and its people and recognize Los Angeles as the "Creative
Capital of the World."
July
4th, 2006 will be the biggest event in downtown Los
Angeles. No date, place or event could have more meaning
or potential impact. July 4, 2006 will be the
the Fort Moore Memorial Committee's 15 Annual
Independence Day celebration.
This 15th
annual 4th of July event pays tribute to the history of
Los Angeles, its pioneers, the first Los
Angeles Independence Day, historical Fort Moore Pioneer Monument,
veterans, and the entire community of the city of Los Angeles.
The annual parade of re-enactors, bands, and dignitaries
will follow an historic path through
downtown L.A. This event is a fun learning experience for the
entire family. You can be a part of the “echoes” of Los Angeles
history and pay tribute to over 158 years of tradition.
Set in
historic downtown Los Angeles, the event is one to remember with
authentic 1847-period costumes, real cannons, muskets, and accurate
historic re-enactments. You do not want to
miss this. It is an event for Los Angeles pride and unity. Cannon
and musket fire, historical re-enactments, tributes to Los Angeles
and to veterans, children’s activities, family history search
computers, pie-eating contest, entertainment, and much more. A true 4th of July event.
July 2006 L.A.’s First Independence Day Celebration
The event begin 10 a.m. and continue until 4:00 a.m.
The Fort Moore Memorial
commemorates the first time American Independence Day
was celebrated in Los Angeles, it was July 4th, 1847 and
honors the troops who helped to win the Southwest.
The Fort itself was
constructed on a prominent hill overlooking the pueblo. The material for
the fort was obtained from timber in the San Gabriel
mountains, with a volunteer Mormon battalion doing most of
the work. It was named for Captain Benjamin Davies Moore who was
killed at the Battle of San Pasqual in 1846. Today the promontory is
occupied by the Los Angeles Unified School District. The
memorial is on Hill Street, between Temple and Ord
Streets.
See more about the Fort
Moore Memorial Committee's July 4th Salute to Los Angeles
celebrating Independence Day, Los Angeles history, the
people of Los Angeles and cultural diversity. We seek to
unite the people in the biggest event in Los Angeles.
